The 80’s (Remixed Covered or Thrashed)

Posted: 5th June 2010 by Stinkylove in Uncategorized

Here are 15 tracks that I have personally played the fuck out of for over the past 2 years all except for a couple new ones that I just picked up, like the Prince remix by White Girls Lust ***amazing*** I cant wait to play extensively.

The DJ formula: 80% familiarity + 20% your own style = you cant fail

When you think of a group that should be remixed, Au Revoir Simone might not be high on your list, with their airy vocals and triple keyboard action, the band that once told British Vogue that their music is the perfect soundtrack for exploring a secret garden at night with a flashlight, none of this exactly scream we are ready for the dance floor.

But then again the best remixes go beyond just speeding up a track, adding a big beat or some other bells and whistles. Reshaping a track, breaking it down and reforming a melody that makes for a new sound and an exciting remix and that’s where ARS’s music excels. There is a lot of space to play with when it comes to this dream pop band’s sound. And it helps to have some real remix masters at work.

You might be thinking, with all these remixes out, why not make a remix album, well they did. The new remix album will be titled “Night Light”, it will be released on Moshi Moshi on July 5th. The album contains remixes by Jens Lekman, Angel Deradoorian, Neon Indian and Aeroplane. You can see the tracklisting below.

What is left to say about The Chemical Brothers? Perennial dance floor masters whose career took off in the Big Beat boom of the 1990’s. Key words being dance floor masters, no one does it like them. Maybe 2007’s “We Are The Night” was a bore but we’ll forgive them for that one with their triumphant return with the release of ‘Further,’ on June 7th.

Swoon is the 2nd single and it gets a nice work out by Don Diablo, both are highly enjoyable.

So just yesterday we received the sickest news, so so so KILLPOP owners Frankmusik and Eli Smith are on a guerrilla tour and we set it up so that the next Wasteland will be a KILLPOP Night. That’s right Frankmusik and Eli are gonna be djing and they are gonna rock the best party in San Jose. I was really shocked to hear this news but the KILLPOP owners are working hard at this new label. Frankmusik has already said that starting up this label with Eli is a new chapter in his life. But that doesn’t mean he’s leaving his label and neither is Eli, just means more music to come.

It wasn’t to long ago that me and my lady were dying to see FRANKMUSIK, so it kinda unreal that hes gonna be in San Jose’s Wasteland, how much more epic can it get.

The Soundtrack To Your Life – The Return of Ratatat

Few electric artists work well both on the dance floor and simply through your headphone. Ratatat (Mike Stroud and Evan Mast) are one of those rare artists. Like all of their previous works, this album has many ups and downs, they make full albums not just singles and their work really plays like a score or soundtrack to something, I’m not exactly sure what, but I’m intrigued. Songs range from dance floor anthems to chill out relaxers.
Extra credit should be handed out for making such compelling music that features no vocals.
The Band is expected to announce late Summer/early Fall tour dates soon.
LP4 will be released June 8th on XL recordings.

Sleigh Bells Ring, Are You Listening?

My first impression of Sleigh Bells, Well I didn’t know what to think of this duo while hearing their demos. Two gorgeous people making a lot of noise and sounding a lot like M.I.A. Was this why they are getting so much hype?
So it wasn’t until the release of their first single ‘Tell Em,” off their debut album “Treats,” that I was sold on their sound. The beats are still big and the guitars are still beastly but the clean production has really help singer Alexis Kraus’s vocals come forward and it’s indeed a treat.
Enjoy that track and two demos of theirs, wonder what they’ll sound like on the album.
Treats is out May 11th on M.I.A.’s very own record label N.E.E.T.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

MIA – Born Free (video)

MUST WATCH MIA!! Watch it while you can, cause this video has already stirred up controversy due to its graphic violence towards the GINGERS. Youtube pulled it earlier this week from their library because so many people flagged it as too graphic. While the videos message of genocide is really provocative and to intense for kids, it’s too necessary for this video to not just wash away and be forgotten.

On another note MIXH3LL’s production sounds inspired by the Butthole Surfers, which is great in it self. So bravo to MIXH3LL for combining the rawness of a trash punk beat w/ MIA’s raw genre breaking vocal talents. It must be Igor Cavalera’s Metal Roots from being in the band  Sepultura,  rising back in him. Read the rest of this entry »

Slapbracelet’s Anthem

If you came out to Wasteland this last month you would have seen Slapbracelet in the mix killing it on the dance-floor. For those of you who live way to0 far, well I have their live DJ set here.

I was at their practice today and I was fortunate enough to get a preview of some of theyre “in da werk” tracks, well they were actually done but you know how artist are all perfectionist about they’re music. I did get a copy of their pressed ep, and you can have a listen to  “Our Anthem” and If you want more visit their soundcloud,
